Europe to Require Standard Chargers for mobile phones

All phones sold in the EU are to use a single type of charger by 2017. Members of the European Parliament have voted in favor of a law to make all mobile phones sold in the EU use the same type of charger. The draft law is aimed at reducing waste, costs and hassle for users.

“This serves the interests both of consumers and the environment,” said MEP Barbara Weiler in a statement. “It will put an end to charger clutter and 51,000 tonnes of electronic waste annually.”

Admittedly, such law would have a bigger impact a few years ago. Most manufacturers have already moved to the micro USB standard anyway. The only notable exception is Apple.

The picture above shows part of a collection of charges some of us have accumulated over the years. In case you are wondering what that thing on the left is, it is from HP iPAQ H1930 PDA.
