How to Sync Microsoft Lumia 950 with Outlook
We’re Windows Phone fans here. After all, Akruto Founder George Tatar developed AkrutoSync to sync Windows Phone with Outlook. So it’s no surprise we’re excited about the latest Microsoft phone — the Lumia 950. Could it be the best Windows Phone? Early reviews say it has a lot of powerful features, but it could stand improvement in other areas.
Lumia 950: What makes it special?
The new Windows Phone runs Windows 10. In reading a handful of reviews, it sounds like Windows 10 isn’t that much different from Windows Phone 8.1 in terms of the interface and experience. Windows 10 introduces Continuum, but the Windows Phone version still has kinks to be worked out.
One of the biggest problems with Lumia 950 is its hefty price tag. That’s to be expected considering the cool features it offers:
- Rear camera with 20 MP sensor, better than the iPhone 6S.
- Camera captures 4K video.
- Windows Hello (Beta) lets you unlock the phone with a fingerprint or face.
- USB Type-C that has a reversible connector.
- USB 3.1 that charges fast and is backwards-compatible.
- Supports MicroSD card for expanding memory up to 200 GB.
Although one of the first rules in buying a mobile phone is not to go cheap. Still it also doesn’t mean shelling out a ton of cash.
Here are the current Lumia phones, most of which cost far less than the Lumia 950. All are Windows Phone 8.1:
- HTC One (M8) Windows.
- LG Lancet.
- Lumia 435.
- Lumia 640 XL.
- Lumia 735.
- Lumia 930.
- Nokia Lumia 635.
Except for the LG Lancet, all of these can be upgraded by opting for the Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview. There’s no official word from Microsoft regarding which phone will receive the Windows 10 upgrade through the phone’s software update feature.
Windows 10 Mobile: What’s it got?
Here are the new features in Windows 10 Mobile:
- Access phone and text messages when using Microsoft Display Dock (sold separately) to take advantage of Continuum for seamless switching between devices.
- Find pictures faster by month and year photos were taken.
- Take stills from a video.
- Adjust the flash after taking a picture.
- Use Microsoft Edge browser.
- Gain more quick settings options.
- Remove duplicate images.
- Enhance photos automatically.
- Create albums automatically.
- Resize and move keyboard around the screen.
- Shrink the screen size for one-handed operation.
All this and you still can’t sync Windows 10 with Outlook Calendar and Contacts. When you upgrade a computer to Windows 10, it switches your login from local to web-based, aka the cloud. If you select the email icon on a Windows 10, it opens Outlook.com. Same for Calendar. In short, Windows 10 comes with the cloud built-in.
With a little bit of work, you can undo it to switch back to using Outlook Calendar and email on your PC instead of in the cloud. One reason many people use the cloud is because it makes it easier to have everywhere access to your calendar and emails. But you don’t have to give up privacy to gain this benefit. Just use AkrutoSync to set up and sync Outlook with Lumia 950 and Windows 10 devices.
If you prefer to stick with a more affordable Windows Phone, Akruto can sync Lumia 930 with Outlook as well as the all aforementioned models and many others.

What to do to sync Lumia 950 with Outlook
Step #1
Download and install AkrutoSync. The installation process takes less than a minute.
Step #2
After the installation, start AkrutoSync and click Configure AkrutoSync. AkrutoSync gives you a choice to sync via Wi-Fi or over the Internet. Wi-Fi is the better option for most people. When asked what kind of device you want to sync, select Windows (phone, computer or tablet). Then choose whether you want to sync calendar, contacts, tasks, notes (or any combination of the above).
Step #3
AkrutoSync uses SSL encryption to make sure your data is secure. To make it work, open a browser on your Lumia 950 and type in the IP address shown in AkrutoSync interface. Install the security certificate and switch back to configuring your PC. AkrutoSync shows screenshots indicating exactly how to do this.
Step #4
Create a password to secure the communication between PC and your Lumia 950.
Step #5
Go to the Settings of your phone and create a Microsoft Exchange account using the information shown in AkrutoSync window.
This is the final step. Once everything is done, your Lumia 950 will be synced with desktop running Outlook and any change you will make on the first device will be automatically reflected on another.
